MISSIONS & CARE SUPPORT
Hola Amigos de Cristo,
What a wonderful Mission Trip we experienced this year! Our team of 24 spent the week building
two cinderblock homes and constructing three chicken coops. One of the homes
is for a recently widowed woman and her children. The second home was for a
family with six children, whose previous home was built out of corn stalks. The
chicken coops were built for three local families as part of a start-up program
for raising chickens.
The children of the second family were the highlight of our trip, to be sure! Aged 11, 9, 8, 5, 3 and 1 year, all but the baby were eager 'helpers' in the various construction duties. They greeted us each day with hugs and thank yous (¡Gracias!), and joined in our efforts with eager hands, often armed with trowels and mud! Clearly, speed and accuracy were a bit lacking on this project, but what a blessing it was to help these beautiful children build their very own house!
We were able to visit the former "Cornstalk School" where we built 4 classrooms in 2013, and a school kitchen in 2014. It was wonderful to see the new kitchen in full use, as well as the classrooms filled with students. The children presented a delightful program for us, and we treated them to a morning of Bible School stories, crafts, and
Those of us on the team who are sponsoring a student's education took time to meet with our students and their family. This was particularly humbling as their gratitude to us for the opportunity to attend school far outweighs the amount we give. Our sponsorship ($37.50 each month) equates to our having a dinner out once a month, yet it pays for their tuition, uniform, books and supplies, and in some cases supplements the family who is losing a 'wage earner' during the child's schooling. Many students and their families traveled a great distance at their own expense to meet with us and thank us for making it possible for them to attend school.
